Shakkar/Gurr
Don’t want/like sugar?
No problem here is my substitute - shakkar.
Gur and Shakkar is made from the juice of sugarcane which is then boiled until it solidifies, rich in minerals such as magnesium, zinc and iron.
Jaggery/Gurr is the solid form and shakkar is the powdered version.
Unlike refined sugar coming from chemical processing, this powder retains trace minerals and vitamins, hence is a healthy and nutrient rich sweetener due to its high content of Molasses.
Molasses is the dark, sweet, syrupy byproduct made during the extraction of sugars from sugarcane.
Molasses is very healthy for you, primarily because of its dense nutritional content. It can do everything from reducing stress and easing indigestion to increasing blood circulation and building stronger bones. A single tablespoon is also high in protein and provides a burst of sugar and carbohydrates.
It is often used in place of sugar for sweetening beverages in rural Pakistan & India.
For people who choose plant-based diets, jaggery/shakkar can help them increase their iron intake without having to take extra supplements. Compared to other sweeteners, it is a good source of antioxidants.
Many people prefer eating a small mouthful of this after a meal. It acts as a detox, as it helps cleanse the liver by flushing out nasty toxins from the body. It’s loaded with antioxidants and minerals like zinc and selenium, which help prevent free-radicals (responsible for early ageing).
